det turkise / Stella Chiweshe / queen of mbira

A musical rebel and spiritual lighthouse visits Aarhus. 74-year-old Stella Chiweshe opens up the rich tradition of mbira-music and invites you to join her in a space crossing time and worlds.

For more than 40 years Stella Chiweshe has walked new paths as a powerful and captivating frontwoman for the mbira-music as it has journeyed from Zimbabwe and out into the world. As the first woman ever to perform as an acclaimed mbira-player Stella Chiweshe is way more than a musician, she is an inspiring rebel. To this day, her heartwarming energy and presence is as fulfilling and impressive as ever.

Mbira-music, which shares its name with the small thumb-piano with 22-28 metal teeth that drives the music, is traditionally used for local ceremonies that build bridges to deceased ancestors. A unique feeling of community manifests itself when Stella Chiweshe performs. A feeling community that crosses time and space, that brings together the living and the dead, and embraces her audience with a warm feeling of rooted journeying inwards and outwards.

Our concert with Stella Chiweshe takes places in the groundfloor of LYNfabrikken in Heimat Studio. A place that allows us to move very close to the tradition, the craft and the stories of Stella Chiweshes mbira-music.
